Bathroom safety is an important yet often overlooked part of creating a supportive environment for older adults. Thoughtful design can make a meaningful difference, not just in preventing accidents but in helping older adults feel secure and capable every day.
Features like walk-in showers, slip-resistant flooring, and emergency call systems can help support daily routines with comfort and confidence. However, integrating all of these features into your loved one’s home can be challenging.
Assisted living communities, such as Peregrine Senior Living at Crossgate, are designed to support your loved ones from the start. Our bathrooms are designed with safety and accessibility in mind, helping to reduce fall risks and support independence.
Why Bathroom Safety Is Important for Older Adults
Bathrooms, with their slippery surfaces and confined spaces, can be challenging for older adults to navigate safely. Often, daily routines such as showering, using the toilet, or washing hands become potential hazards due to the increased risk of falls. Some of the key factors contributing to this risk include:
- Reduced mobility: Arthritis, joint pain, and muscle weakness impact movement and balance.
- Declining vision: Difficulty seeing hazards like wet floors or raised thresholds.
- Chronic conditions: Health issues such as Parkinson’s disease or cognitive decline can make everyday bathroom tasks more complicated.
According to the CDC, one in four adults aged 65 and older falls each year, with many falls occurring in the bathroom. For this reason, senior living communities place a strong emphasis on bathroom safety features to create secure spaces tailored to the needs of their residents.
Assisted Living Bathrooms Designed for Fall Prevention & Comfort
Assisted living communities, such as Peregrine Senior Living at Crossgate, are thoughtfully designed with older adults in mind. These communities recognize that a well-designed bathroom is important for reducing risks and supporting both independence and dignity.
Here’s how assisted living bathrooms take safety to the next level:
Slip-Resistant Floors
Equipping bathrooms with non-slip flooring materials significantly reduces the chance of falls. These specially designed floors provide extra grip, even when wet, offering unparalleled peace of mind.
Grab Bars for Stability
Professionally installed grab bars, positioned around toilets, bathtubs, and showers, provide support for older adults when transitioning between movements. These bars are sturdy yet discreet, blending into a homelike environment without appearing overly medical.
Walk-In Showers
Traditional tubs can be difficult and hazardous for older adults to step into. Most assisted living communities help mitigate this risk by offering walk-in showers with low or no thresholds, enabling safe entry and exit. Many also install shower chairs for added convenience.

Accessible Fixtures
Faucets equipped with lever handles or motion sensors help older adults with arthritis or weakened muscles complete daily bathroom routines effortlessly. Additionally, raised toilet seats are often installed, reducing the strain of sitting and standing.
Emergency Call Buttons
Bathrooms in senior living communities frequently feature discreetly placed emergency call buttons or pull cords. This helps provide support and assistance in the event of a fall or medical emergency.
Proper Lighting
Adequate, glare-free lighting helps older adults see where they’re going, especially during late-night trips to the bathroom. Motion-activated night lights are also popular for helping older adults navigate securely in darkened spaces.
In some communities, lighting is also integrated with motion sensors that gently illuminate pathways without disrupting sleep, helping reduce night time disorientation or confusion.
Tips for Safety in the Bathroom
Here are some tips to stay safe when using the bathroom:
- Install grab bars: Position grab bars near the toilet and inside the shower to provide additional support and stability for older adults.
- Use non-slip mats: Place non-slip mats both inside and outside the bathtub or shower to prevent slips and falls. Opt for high-quality materials that stay firmly in place.
- Adjust water temperature: Set the water heater to a safe temperature, ideally below 120°F, to minimize the risk of burns or scalding.
- Improve lighting: Ensure the bathroom is well-lit, including nightlights for nighttime visits. Motion-sensor lights can be especially helpful for additional safety.
- Consider walk-in tubs or showers: Opt for walk-in tubs or zero-threshold showers that eliminate the need to step over high edges, reducing the risk of tripping.
- Keep essentials within reach: Arrange toiletries, towels, and other frequently used items at an accessible height so older adults don’t need to stretch or bend excessively.
- Use raised toilet seats: A raised toilet seat can make getting on and off much easier for those with mobility challenges.
- Declutter the bathroom: Remove unnecessary items that could become tripping hazards and keep pathways clear.
Implementing these safety measures helps create a bathroom environment that is secure and user-friendly, allowing for greater peace of mind for both older adults and their families.
