Caring for an aging family member comes with many decisions, big and small. One of the most important ones is deciding when it’s time for assisted living. This is an important step in helping your loved one receive the care, connection, and comfort they deserve.
Here’s what families like yours need to know about assisted living: It’s not just about care—it’s about creating a safe, vibrant, and enriching home where older adults can thrive. Assisted living communities are thoughtfully designed to provide the perfect blend of support, engagement, and independence for older adults.
Who Benefits from Assisted Living?
Assisted living communities are ideal for older adults who value their independence but could use a helping hand with daily tasks. Those who face challenges like managing medications, preparing balanced meals, or maintaining their own home may find assisted living to be a wonderful potential solution.
Depending on the community, requirements to be eligible for assisted living may include:
- The resident is over 55
- The resident requires assistance with their activities of daily living (ADLs)
- The resident doesn’t require around-the-clock care
- The resident’s health is generally stable
Beyond helping residents to meet their physical needs, assisted living is also a haven for those who want connection. It’s a place that nurtures social bonds, helping to combat isolation while offering opportunities to engage in fun and meaningful activities tailored to their interests and abilities.
By moving to an assisted living community, your loved ones can enjoy their golden years with fewer worries while being surrounded by compassionate support and vibrant friendships.
Services & Amenities Offered in Assisted Living
It’s been said before, but it’s worth stressing: assisted living is more than just a place to live. It’s also a lifestyle of well-being, comfort, and personal growth. Here’s what you can expect when your loved one joins a senior living community:
- Medication management: Professional assistance means your loved one will get the right doses at the right times.
- Personal care: Help with grooming, dressing, bathing, and other daily routines to maintain dignity and quality of life.
- Meals and nutrition: Nutritious, chef-prepared meals served daily with dietary preferences and needs in mind.
- Social activities: Group games, exercise classes, movie nights, and creative workshops foster joy and relationships.
- Transportation: Convenient rides for medical appointments, errands, and outings help maintain independence.
- Housekeeping and maintenance: Say goodbye to chores with regular cleaning and upkeep!
Every aspect of the community is personalized to support each resident’s health and happiness. After all, at the end of the day, we simply want everyone to feel fulfilled.
Choosing the Right Community
Finding the perfect assisted living community for your loved one requires thoughtful consideration. Look for a community that balances quality care with a welcoming and engaging culture.
Here are some factors to consider during your search:
- Location: Proximity to family, friends, and familiar surroundings can provide comfort and ease.
- Care services: Determine whether the community offers the care that your loved one needs as now as well as the care they may need in the future.
- Cost: Research pricing and what’s included in the monthly fee. Explore financial options (more on this below).
- Culture: Tour the community to observe interactions between residents and staff. Does it feel warm and uplifting? Is the atmosphere lively and inviting?
Take the time to meet staff and residents, ask about daily schedules, and attend events or meals if possible. Include your loved one in the decision as much as possible—after all, it’s their new home! It’s these kinds of personal touches that will help you feel confident in your choice.

The Cost of Assisted Living
Financial planning is a big part of transitioning to assisted living. The costs can vary wildly depending on where you live and the communities you’re exploring. While it may seem daunting, there are multiple ways to manage the costs, and there are many resources available to support families. Some of the common ways that families pay for assisted living include:
- Private pay: Savings, retirement funds, or family contributions usually cover much of the expense.
- Long-term care insurance: Some policies provide coverage for long-term residential care services.
- Government assistance: Various programs like Medicaid or Veterans’ benefits may help cover certain costs.
It’s worth consulting a financial planner or elder care specialist to explore the available resources and create a plan to make the transition manageable.
Transitioning to Assisted Living
There’s no denying that moving to a senior living community marks a significant step in your loved one’s life. Preparing for the transition thoughtfully can help make the process smoother and more reassuring for everyone involved.
Here’s how to get started:
- Begin packing essentials well in advance, including clothing, photographs, and meaningful items to make the space feel like home.
- Communicate openly with your loved one about their preferences and involve them in decision-making.
- Visit the community together before move-in day to help them feel more comfortable and excited.
Once you’re moved in, it’s all about settling into a new routine. Here are some tips:
- Encourage participation in social activities to build connections and foster a sense of belonging.
- Stay involved by visiting regularly, attending events, or even sharing meals in your loved one’s new home.
- Check in with community staff so you can feel confident that your loved one’s needs and preferences are met.
A thoughtful transition can help ease the adjustment while opening the door to new experiences.

Jenga was a hit here this week at Peregrine!
One of our Wellness staff, Priya taught our residents how to play Jenga for the first time. It was fun, suspenseful, & engaging.
Another fun way to play this game is add trivia questions on the Jenga Blocks ( was requested for next game ) 😊
